Board of Directors


As a recognized Alabama non-profit organization, FlyQuest is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors, who contribute financial and in-kind services to the organization.

Mark Spencer, Chairman

Mark is a software developer and aviation addict. He is an ATP and Instrument rated pilot and holds a single pilot type rating in Eclipse 500, a twin-engine private jet. He was founder and chairman of Digium up through the time it was acquired by Sangoma. Mark was the original author of the Asterisk telephony platform. More recently he founded Avilution, an aviation technology company. Mark has a degree in Computer Engineering from Auburn University.

David Knies, Secretary/Treasurer

David is a local business owner who is perhaps the perfect example of FlyQuest's target student. He began flying while a senior in high school, often flying after school hours for the humanitarian organization Angel Flight. Since he started, he has flown over 300 Volunteer Missions. In 2008, he received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award from Dick Cheney, Vice-President of the United States. He is the owner of Aviators Travel and lives in Huntsville with his wife, Ashley.

George Davis, Director

George currently serves as FlyQuest's Eduction Director. As a child growing up, George lived on a farm in Lawrence County, Alabama. He often recalls many days watching aircraft as they made their approach into Huntsville airport. Upon graduation from high school in 1985, he decided to join the U.S. Air Force and it was there that he was able to begin his career in aviation as an aircraft mechanic. While in the Air Force he decided to advance his post-service career and obtained a Bachelor of Science from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX. Immediately following, he began an MBA program through Webster University in St. Louis. MO. George has three daughters and lives in Moulton. George is an Area Director for Signature Flight Support, with his home office at the Huntsville International Airport. He also holds a commercial pilot certificate and enjoys flying private contract flights on weekends and evenings.

William "Cody" Garton, Director

Cody is a software airworthiness engineer for the U.S. Army, specializing in Black Hawk, Chinook, Apache, and Kiowa-Warrior platforms. For nearly a decade prior, he served as part of the U.S. Army's Game Studio, specializing in gaming and simulation development for various Army weapons, vehicles, and marketing systems. Cody has been passionate about flight since he was 5 years old, building airplanes out of all sorts of things with his grandmother, including his own 5 screen simulator. He holds a Private Pilot certificate and owns a Super Petrel LS Amphibious aircraft.  Cody is a 2015 graduate from Auburn University.

Rodney Pennywell, Director

Rodney learned to fly at 16 years of age at the US Air Force Academy as a military dependent. He is an aviation enthusiast who later joined the Army, graduated from flight school, flew multiple different rotary wing aircraft and later graduated from the Aviation Maintenance Test Pilot Program for Blackhawk helicopters. He flew with the Army for nine years as a pilot in command, night vision goggle pilot, and served at several duty stations including the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. Rodney is a business and strategy consultant with Pennywell Development Company, Ad4Group, and also sits on the board of Still Serving Veterans. Rodney supports FlyQuest in the development of strategic plans, and as a youth Education Instructor.

Kevin Vandeberg, A.A.E., Director

Kevin currently is the Chief Operating Officer for the Huntsville-Madison County Airport Authority. He has 25+ years of experience in airport management along with 5+ years in airport planning and consulting. He is an accredited member of the American Association of Airport Executives and has served as President of the Aviation Council of Alabama. Kevin has a degree in Aviation Management from Auburn University.

Kerry Boren

Kerry’s passion for aviation began at childhood when he would spend countless hours playing Microsoft Flight Simulator. He started volunteering with FlyQuest in early 2016, primarily helping to operate FlyQuest’s 6DOF full-motion flight simulator. Since that time his volunteer interest and involvement with FlyQuest has expanded to support all of its present-day activities. He also volunteers with “A Special Day for Special Kids” in Opa-Locka, FL, presented by a Florida volunteer pilot organization, Vital Flight. Professionally, he is the Health Safety and Environment Manager for Signature Flight Support in Huntsville. In his spare time, he enjoys aviation photography and riding off-road ATVs.

Joel Harris

Russ Lewey

Russ, a retired US Air Force Colonel, accrued over 3,000 hours flying T-37, T-38, T-39, B-52, and C-12 aircraft. As an Instructor Pilot and Air Attaché, he planned and conducted exercises and training around the world. In addition to his flight experience, he was assigned to four US embassies, providing security assistance to countries in Europe, Middle East, and Asia. He relocated to the Huntsville area in 2008, where he now teaches courses at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and is the Alabama Air Force Association (AFA) state president.
